Using Quark 7 to Create a PDF

These instructions apply to anyone using Quark 7. It is highly recommended that you have the latest version of Quark. Check www.quark.com for more information. Before continuing, make sure your ad complies with Source Interlink Media's Digital Guidelines.

Important Note: Quark 7 has the ability to directly export a PDF file, however you must download and use Source Interlink Media's PDF Style to create a PDF/X-1a file. If you have Quark 6 and Acrobat Standard or Professional (not Acrobat Reader) version 6 or higher, see the instructions on how to create a PDF/X-1a file. If you are a Quark 6 user who does not have access to Acrobat Standard or Professional, see the instructions on how to export a PDF directly from QuarkXpress 6.

Importing Source Interlink Media's PDF Style • Click here to download Source Interlink Media’s PDF Output Style and unzip the file to your desktop. (If you are unable to download or load these settings, you can manually choose the correct PDF export options in step C, below.) Note: Importing Source Interlink Media PDF styles only needs to be once for intial setup. • To Import Source Interlink Media’s PDF Output Style, choose Edit > Output Styles... An Output Styles Dialog box will appear. Click Import and select the file SIM_PDFX1a_Color that you just unzipped, then click Open. Click Import again and select the file SIM_PDFX1a_Gray then click Open. Both settings should now appear in the Output Styles dialog box. Click Save.

Exporting a PDF from Quark • With your file open in Quark, choose File > Export > Layout as PDF.... An Export as PDF dialog box will appear. • Name the file and choose the folder in which you would like the PDF to be saved. At the bottom of the dialog box, select the appropriate SIM PDF Style (Color or Gray) in the PDF Style drop down menu. • Click Save to create the PDF file. • Once completed, be sure to compare the PDF version of the ad with the original version.
Manually Creating PDF Styles • With your file open in Quark, choose Edit > Output Styles.... An Output Styles dialog box will appear, click New and choose PDF. • Match the settings for each option (Pages, Meta Data, Hyperlinks, Compression, Color, Fonts, Marks, Bleed, Layers, Transparency, OPI, JDF and Summary) to the corresponding screen shots on the right. In the PDF Style dialog box at the top name the style "SIM PDF-X1a Color" and Click OK. (You may want to create an additional style for your Grayscale ads) • Click Save to save your PDF style. • Go back to Step B to export your PDF.
